Weddings at Christ Church
Christ Church is a lovely venue for a wedding both inside and outside. Whatever time of year, we are able to offer a warm welcoming venue with modern facilities to cater for your special day; our church buildings are also able to cater for smaller wedding receptions.
A Church wedding is a special occasion where couples make solemn vows before God, their friends and their family. On your wedding day a new chapter of life begins – as such we want to help couples make that day special and to enter into married life with a sense that every day needs also to be special.
Anyone who lives in the parish or who can show a special connection with Christ Church, is eligible to marry here (you don’t have to be a regular church goer). If you are divorced and wish to re-marry in church, we may be able to help you, so please get in touch.
If you decide to get married at Christ Church, the Vicar will have a few informal meetings with you to help you in your preparations for marriage and the wedding ceremony, there will also be a rehearsal approximately one week before.
There is a required legal fee for marrying in a church. If you marry outside your own parish, it was £497 in 2017 and £456 if you married in your home parish (providing you both live there).
In 2018, it cost £517 if you married away from where you live and £474 if you married in your home parish. This is set by the Church of England nationally and is the same for every church.
This basic legal fee includes the cost of the vicar, the church, calling your banns, a banns certificate, the marriage certificate, lighting and all administration. Please see the attached link for more details: https://www.yourchurchwedding.org/article/the-cost-of-church-weddings/
Other fees are added to this, such as the fees for an Organist, Verger, and any specific requirements that you may have – we are happy to discus and help you plan your special day.
Before your Wedding Day, we will read out your Banns of Marriage in our main Sunday service for three consecutive weeks – to which you will receive an invitation. If you live outside of our Parish, you must have your Banns of Marriage read in the parish where you live. If you both live in separate parishes other than ours, your Banns will need to be read in both parishes before you are able to marry.

Marriage Prep Evening: Christchurch held a Marriage Prep evening on Saturday 6th February 2016 for 13 couples “tying the knot” that year at our Church and St Mary’s. The afternoon/evening saw the couples listening to and discussing with Revd Rob a number of elements of the Marriage Ceremony. They went into the Church itself seeing those elements in practise. One of the main points of the exercise apart from de-mystifying the ceremony and putting people at their ease in our beautiful Church, was to allow Rev’d Rob to make better use of his time as he would, normally, meet each couple individually.
As the discussions took place, final preparations were taking place behind the scenes for a 3 course meal! As the couples emerged from the Church they were greeted with glasses of bubbly and canapés. Our thanks to David & Mabel for the delicious canapés they so lovingly prepared (David you make a mean sausage roll!). Drawing back the dividing screen, the couples were delighted to discover what to all intents and purposes was a 5* restaurant! Seated at tables for 2 the happy couples were served by Fiona, Sarah, Barbara & Nicola with a main course of Chicken or vegetarian option and assorted veg (prepared and cooked by Mark & Simon) followed by assorted desserts (including a lovely apple and blackberry crumble made by Sarah McConnaughie). With music playing, wine flowing and various quizzes for the couples to complete, the evening drew to a close.
As with all such events much thanks must go to all those who prepared the Centre and made the evening a great success but particular thanks are due to Barbara & Nicola for the hard work that went into ensuring the evening was a huge success!
